Sommer 2012 - Keine Spur von Finanz- und Wirtschaftkrise bei den ausländischen Touristen in Barcelona. Sie kommen in Massen aus aller Welt und genießen schöne Urlaubstage in Barcelona, an den nahen Stränden der Umgebung und auf den vorgelagerten Balearen-Inseln. Gespart wird wohl überall, nur nicht beim Urlaubsbudget! So gewinnt der Werbeslogan: „ab-in-den-Urlaub“ eines Internet-Ferien-Portals wohl an Bedeutung, zumal der Sommer auf der nördlichen Halbkugel sehr zu wünschen übrig lässt.  

Interessant ist auch die Tatsache dass viele Touristen aus den Ländern der ehemaligen Sowjetunion das sonnige Spanien für sich als Reiseziel entdeckt haben. Getreu diesem Motto hat sich unser Airlines-Korrespondent, Andreas Schmucki, anfangs Juni 2012 auf den Flug gemacht um am Flughafen Barcelona die farbenfrohen Airliner mit der Kamera einzufangen.

El Prat

Der Flughafen Barcelona auch El Prat genannt liegt gut 15 km. südwestlich von Barcelona. Mit über 34 Millionen Passagieren (2011) ist er nach dem Flughafen Madrid Barajas der zweitgrößte Flughafen Spaniens. Er dient als Drehkreuz für Air Nostrum, Ryanair und Vueling und zählte im Jahr 2008 erstmals über 30 Millionen Passagiere.

Die erste Start- und Landebahn stammt aus dem Jahr 1948 und im gleichen Jahr erfolgte die Aufnahme des Interkontinentalverkehrs durch die Pan Am. Der Flughafen wurde anschließend weiter ausgebaut und die Eröffnung der zweiten Bahn erfolgte 1952. Nachdem 1963 erstmalig mehr als 1 Million Passagier abgefertigt wurden, schwebte bereits 1970, wie ein halbes Jahr zuvor in Frankfurt, die erste Pan Am Boeing 747 aus New York (JFK) kommend in Barcelona ein.

Weitere Ausbauetappen gab es im Vorfeld der Olympische Sommerspiele 1992 und insbesondere im ersten Jahrzehnt des 21. Jahrhunderts, als die dritte Landebahn und ein komplett neues Terminal, (heute T1), südwestlich des vorhandenen, (heute T2), entstanden.
