Der Flughafen liegt knapp 30 km. nordöstlich der Stadt München im Erdinger Moos in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zu Freising und wird von der Flughafen München GmbH betrieben. Am 17. Mai 1992 gingen die Lichter am alten Flughafen von München aus und in einer spektakulären Nachtaktion wurde der neue Flughafen München II. nach einer Dislozierung, seiner neuen Bestimmung übergeben.
Rund 100 Airlines verbinden München mit 230 Zielen in über 70 Ländern. Insbesondere für die Lufthansa und ihre Partner von „Star Alliance“ ist München ein wichtiger Zentralknotenpunkt, der heute einen durchschnittlichen Umsteiger Anteil von gut 40% aufweist. Ferner ist München auch die Heimatbasis des Lufthansa-Partners „Augsburg Airways“.

Da der Flughafen schon in Kürze an seine Kapazitätsgrenzen stößt ist wohl der Bürgerentscheid vom 17. Juni 2012 gegen eine dritte Startbahn die gebaut werden soll, ein herber Rückschlag.
Es bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass sich die gegenseitigen Parteien ohne Anwälte und Gerichte einigen können, denn ein verträgliches Konzept, das auch die Anliegen der Umweltschützer beinhaltet wäre wirklich zu Begrüßen.
Sicherlich kein Einzelfall; da sich europaweit, wenn nicht gar weltweit Behörden, Airports, Umweltschutzverbände aber  auch die Menschen die um einen Airport wohnen, sich je länger je mehr mit diesem Thema auseinandersetzen müssen.
