Franz Josef Strauss

The airport is about 30 km northeast of the city of Munich in the Erdinger Moos in the immediate vicinity of Freising and operated by the Munich Airport Authority. On 17 May 1992 the lights went out at the old Munich airport and in a spectacular night action, the new Munich Airport II, after a dislocation, started operations on time the following morning.
Around 100 airlines connect Munich with 230 destinations in over 70 countries. Especially for Lufthansa and its partners of "Star Alliance" Munich is an important central hub, which now has an average transfer passengers share of over 40%. Furthermore, Munich is also the home base of Lufthansa's partner "Augsburg Airways".

As the airport meets in the very near future its capacity limits are probably the referendum held of 17 June 2012 against a third runway to be built, a severe setback.
It can only be hoped that the mutual parties can agree without lawyers and courts, to really welcome an acceptable concept that would also include the concerns of the environmentalists.
Certainly not an isolated case; since in Europe, if not worldwide authorities, airports, environmental groups, but also the people who live next to an airport, are forced to deal with this issue in the future.
