On 23rd  October 2013, around 2pm local time, a F/A-18D of the 11th Fighter Squadron of the Swiss Air Force crashed in bad weather into the eastern rockside of Mount Pilatus (Lopper). Sadly both crews, Pilot Stefan Jaeger (38) and Volker Lang (54), lost their life’s.

The aircraft‘s departed at Meiringen AB at 1.35pm in Formation with another F/A-18C. Their Mission was to fly low level towards Buochs and then start their air policing mission followed by an 1 vs 1 air-to-air combat training. The Flight Safety Officer was alerted at 1.56pm and the crash was confirmed at 2.05pm . The F/A-18C returned to Meiringen AB and landing safe at 2.21pm.

This is the second crash of a Swiss AF F/A-18D; the first one occurred more than 15 years ago. In the crash of 7th April 1998 both pilot’s Karl Heinzelmann (42) and Andrea Martinoli (27) were killed.

Das Flugzeug startete um 13.35 Uhr lokaler Zeit in Formation mit einer F/A-18C in Meiringen. Ihre Mission war es auf niedriger Flughöhe nach Buochs zu ​​fliegen und dann ein Luft-Polizeieinsaz zu üben und danach ein Luftkampftraining einer gegen einer. Der Flugsicherheitsoffizier wurde um 13.56 alarmiert und der Absturz anschliessend um 14.05 Uhr bestätigt. Die F/A-18C kehrte nach Meiringen zurück und landete dort um 14.21 Uhr.

Dies ist der zweite Absturz einer Schweizer F/A-18D nach dem ersten vor mehr als 15 Jahren. Beim Absturz vom 7. April 1998 kamen Pilot Karl Heinzelmann (42) und Andrea Martinoli (27) ums Leben.
