Like every spring in Friedrichshafen at the fairgrounds at the airport the Aero 2014 took place. The 22nd edition of the fair for the Private Pilots (General Aviation) again offered some news. Beside the Volocopter the E-Volo among others, the new Cessna Citation M2 were presented.

At the end of the fair on Saturday, Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann and AERO project manager Roland Bosch gave a very positive assessment of how the exhibition went for all participants: “With 606 exhibitors from 35 countries, not only a highly professional and international range of general aviation was present in Friedrichshafen; a trade audience from around the globe had the industry conference on its flight plan: 33,400 visitors came to Lake Constance (compared to 32,600 in 2013). The focus of the trade professionals and the media was on new aircraft from the segment of business jets, new ultralight and electric aircraft, and helicopters and drones for civilian use. Technical innovations for the on-board electronics and many lectures on current topics in aviation were also received with great interest by the trade visitors.

History for the Aero
1979 during the exhibition RMF (Racing / Motors / Aircraft), the first air show in Friedrichshafen was held. From 1987, it became the independent AERO at Friedrichshafen. It's held annually on the grounds of Messe Friedrichshafen, adjacent airport Friedrichshafen. As a trendsetter this exhibition offers a complete range of general aviation decisive added value in the form of future-oriented social events. The dream of flying is at AERO Friedrichshafen reality. Corporate jets, propeller aircraft and gliders, helicopters and the leading suppliers in the electronics, service and maintenance segment of aviation are offered in the eleven exhibition halls.

Pilatus

The main Focus by Pilatus was the "old" PC-12 Transport. But the Version PC-12NG is highly modern and has a new upgraded Cockpit, Winglets and a stronger Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67P Turbine. Also presented where Modells of the new PC-24 which has at the 1. August 2014 the Roll-Ot at Stans. The PC-24 ist the first Jetplane of Piatus.

Volocopter

A truly innovative concept is the new Volocopter which had its first flight on 17th November 2013 . A kind of helicopter with 18 electric motors that looks like an oversized Quadrocopter. The pilot does not need any mechanical components and works exclusively via throttling or increase the performance of individual motors. The range respectivel the flight time is approximately 1 hour. Whether this concept is successful the future will tell - we are certainly skeptical. After the battery power is limited the duration of flight and supporting performance quite significantly.

General Aviation

Friedrichshafen - General aviation is taking off again: The industry again recorded a slight increase in new aircraft registrations. Worldwide there are currently around 370,000 general aviation aircraft, with roughly 24,000 aircraft being operated in Germany. There are a total of 75,000 pilots in Germany, and worldwide the number of licensed pilots is around a million. Experts in Germany expect annual sales of two to three billion euros in general aviation. These numbers are expected to rise, according to industry representatives at the start of the international air show AERO on Wednesday at a press conference in Friedrichshafen.

Die grossen Drei

Cessna, Beech and Embraer

Yes you can already count Embraer to the big three of the business aviation. All three Presented itself at the AERO 2014 in static display. Cessna and Beech were represented by virtually the entire product range. Beech showed from the single-engined Baron to King Air all planes. The King Air's also have infrared cameras for the approach and landing.

Cessna presented the Citation M2 as news, but what is new about this plane? The new "glass cockpit" and the winglets only.

According to the German Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association AOPA Germany, over 75,000 pilot licences were issued and over 23,000 General Aviation aircraft were licenced. The sector benefits from a closely meshed network of airports and airfields, with 400 regional airports, 250 glider airfields and 100 helicopter pads enabling take-off and landing. The interest in General Aviation is reflected by association membership, with 101,071 individuals organized in aviation associations across Germany.
The AERO Aviation Show on the shores of Lake Constance has been a hotbed of technical innovation in the General Aviation sector and a lively networking rendezvous for the industry since 1977. The success for the AERO Friedrichshafen is testimony to the key significance of General Aviation for the world economy.
