During my recent visit to South Africa I looked out for any interesting aviation events that might be worth visiting. On Internet I found references to the Nylstrom taildragger fly in that had already taken place in previous years.
Taildraggers sounded interesting as it suggested historic aircraft.

The organisers clearly pointed out that it is not an airshow but that flying is encouraged. As I had enough time I decided to go and have a look.

I knew that Nylstrom is about one and a half hours driving from Pretoria, but when I wanted to check the route on the map, I couldn’t find it anywhere. Where the heck is this Nylstrom? It turned out that it was renamed some years ago to its original African name of Modimolle, named after a nearby mountain. However, the name of the event was kept.

When I arrived I quickly realized that this was more of a family affair event. No barriers anywhere. Some visitors put up a tent under the wing of their aircraft. People were walking on the taxiway and among the aircraft. When a plane taxied they just made space and then went about their business as you can see from the pictures.

I was really surprised at the high number of visiting aircraft on the airfield. Some of them types I had never before seen. As I had guessed there were a number of historic aircraft present and flying.

Douglas DC-3

A Douglas DC-3 gave air experience flights to underprivileged children. The DC-3 was in fact almost too big for the runway, because it had to start the takeoff run in the grass behind the runway. And it kicked off a dust storm every time it run up it’s engines. Having no barriers meant of course that it was possible to take pictures without any obstructions and no big lens was necessary either. I took all the pictures with my 24- 70 mm lens.

If you are in the area at the time, well worth a visit.
