Das Slovak International Air Fest 2018 (SIAF) fand dieses Jahr am 1. und 2. September auf dem Militärflugplatz Sliac statt. Dieses Jahr war es ein ganz spezieller Anlass, da die slowakische Luftwaffe, wie auch die tschechische Luftwaffe, das 100-jährige Jubiläum feierten. Dieses Jahr war die Sonne nur am Trainingstag (Freitag) zu sehen, und das Wochenende bescherte dem Publikum einen bedeckten Himmel und immer wieder kurzer Regen. Der Eröffnungs-Vorbeiflug sah ein tschechischer Regierungs-Airbus A319 und zwei begleitende JAS-39 Gripen und ein slowakischer Regierungs-Airbus A319 mit zwei ihrer MIG-29 in Aktion. Stellvertretend für ausgemusterte slowakische Militärflugzeuge war ein privater MIG-15 Doppelsitzer aus der Tschechoslowakei im Flugprogramm.

Die aktuellen Maschinen der Slovak Air Force wurden ebenfalls in der Luft und am Boden vorgestellt. Es waren dies zwei MIG-29AS und eine MIG-29 UBS, eine L-39ZA Albatros, eine C-27 Spartan, eine Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk und eine Mil Mi 17 Hip. Wichtige Punkte im Flugprogramm, nebst dem attraktiven Programm der slowkischen MIg-29, waren die Patrouille de France, die EF-18A Hornet der spanischen Luftwaffe, die JAS-39 Gripen der ungarischen Luftwaffe, eine F-16C Block 52+ der polischen Luftwaffe (mit Flares) und als grosse Überraschung eine Tornado der deutschen Luftwaffe. Die Patrouille de France verliess Sliac am Sonntagmorgen ohne Vorführung, da sie am gleichen Tag noch eine Show in Frankreich (Cambrai) zu bestreiten hatten. Weitere Teilnehmer am Flugprogramm waren die Royal Jordanian Falcons mit vier ganz neuen Extra 330LX und drei Red Bull Maschinen aus Salzburg, nämlich die B-25 Mitchell, die F4U-4 Corsair und der BO 105 Helikopter. Die schwedische Luftwaffe war mit einer Saab SK 60 vertreten und Zoltan Veres aus Ungarn demonstrierte einmal mehr mit einer MXS sein grosses Können in einer atemberaubenden Show. Schlussendlich waren auch eine grössere Anzahl von Helikopters in der Luft, unter anderem die tschechische und die polnische Mil Mi 35 Hind, die slowakischen UH-60 Black Hawk und Mil Mi 17 Hind und die Augusta A-109 der belgischen Luftwaffe, die sehr grosszügig Flares abschoss. Angekündigt aber nicht erschienen waren die Red Bull P-38 Lightning und die private P-51D Mustang aus der Tschechoslowakei.

From a spectators point of view, the clear highlights were the two MIG-29 executing a show in tandem formation, the Spanish EF-18A Hornet whose demo pilot, Major Pablo Carretero, put on a sensational display whereby he was pushing the flight envelope to the extreme and the Patrouille de France on Saturday who, while still present on Sunday morning, failed to do a display and took off for another air show in Cambrai, France before noon. The surprise appearance of the German Tornado in the flying display raised many eyebrows, particularly in Germany, where they have not seen a Tornado display for a long time. Finally, not to forget was the always spectacular display by Red Bull’s Bo 105 skillfully piloted by Rainer Wilke.
Aus der Warte des slowakischen Publikums waren, nebst der Demonstration von zwei miteinander fliegenden MIG-29, die Patrouille de France und die spektakuläre Vorführung der spanischen EF-18A Hornet, geflogen von Major Pablo Carretero, die absoluten Hoehepunkte. Der spanische Pilot glänzte mit sehr gewagten Manövern, die voll an die Grenzen des Möglichen ging. Die Flugvorführung des deutschen Tornados war für alle sehr überraschend, vor allem für die deutschen Spotters, die in ihrem eigenen Land schon lange auf eine Vorführung des Tornado warten. Schlussendlich muss auch die immer wieder aussergewöhnliche Vorführung der Red Bull BO 105 erwähnt werden, vorgeflogen vom erfahrenen Piloten Rainer Wilke.

Die Bodenausstellung beinhaltete unter anderem zwei attraktive Phantom F-4E Terminators der türkischen Luftwaffe, zwei Typhoon FGR5 der Royal Air Force, eine Typhoon S der österreichischen Luftwaffe, eine zusaetzliche EF-18 A Hornet der Spanier und aus Italien kamen die Leonardo M-146 und die Alenia C-27J Spartan.

Am Schluss kann noch beigefügt werden, dass die slowakische Luftwaffe kürzliche entschieden hat, ihre MIG-29 mit der amerikanischen F-16 Block 70 zu ersetzen. Nicht berücksichtigt wurde schlussendlich die JAS-39 Gripen, da der Preis höher und die Lieferfrist länger war als für die F-16. Das Training der slowakische Piloten wird anfänglich in den USA stattfinden, und die Lieferung der ersten vier Maschinen in die Slowakei wird im Jahre 2023 erwartet. Die F-16s werden auf der einzigen Fighter-Basis der Slowakei in Sliac stationiert.
