Richard Ormond Shuttleworth wurde 1909 geboren und war ein begeisterter Motorsport- und Luftfahrtliebhaber. Sein Reichtum ermöglichte es ihm, eine beeindruckende Sammlung von Fahr- und Flugzeugen aufzubauen. Richard Shuttlewort wurde am 2 August 1940 während der Ausbildung zum Piloten der RAF getötet, als seine Fairey Battle bei Elmware (South Oxfordshire) in einen Hügel flog. Seine Mutter gründete im selben Jahr den Shuttleworth Trust zur Erinnerung an ihren Sohn. Dieser kümmert sich um die Sammlung und erweiterte sie im Laufe der Zeit.

Die Shuttleworth Collection ist einzigartig und faszinierend. Sie hat ihren Sitz auf dem Old Warden Aerodrome und beherbergt eine große Anzahl von Exponaten aus den frühesten Tagen der Luftfahrt, über den Ersten Weltkrieg bis hin zu einer Spitfire und Sea Hurricane. Fast alle ihre Exponate sind flugfähig und als solche sind viele einzigartig auf der Welt.

More than an Air Show

Richard Shuttleworth interessierte sich nicht nur für Flugzeuge sondern auch für Automobile und dabei insbesondere für Rennwagen. Er nahm 1928 am “London to Brighton Veteran Car Run” teil. Er gewann die „Brighton Speed Trials“ 1934 auf einem Bugatti Typ 51 und erneut 1935 auf einem Alfa-Romeo P3 Tipo B. Aus diesem Grund sind auch über 35 Autos und Motorräder Teil der Shuttleworth Collection. Die Fahrzeuge werden in einem Corso vor der eigentlichen Air Show den Besuchern gezeigt.

The Red Arrows

Eher ungewöhnlich für Shuttleworth war die Teilnahme der Red Arrows. Das Display in Shuttleworth wird normalerweise nicht mit schnellen, lauten und modernen Jets in Verbindung gebracht und weist tendenziell eine etwas weniger hektische Stimmung auf. Die Red Arrows fliegen seit 1980 die BAe Hawk T.1 und zeigten am Himmel über Bedfordshire ihre wie üblich perfekte Show.

Im Sommer 2019 wird sich das Team voraussichtlich auf eine Tour durch Nordamerika begeben, die als „Western Hawk 19“ bekannt sein wird. Nach dem Auftritt beim Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) wird das Team Ende Juli über den Atlantik fliegen. Sie treten an amerikanischen und kanadischen Flugshows auf.

Racer

Die Miles Hawk Speed Six wurde als Rennflugzeug aus der bereits beliebten Miles Hawk Serie von Sportflugzeugen entwickelt. Seit 2018 ist die Maschine (G-ADGP) im Besitz der Shuttleworth Collection und bildet mit den beiden Percival Mew Gull (G-AEKL G-AEXF) und der De Havilland DH.88 Comet (G-ACSS) ein eigentliches Rennteam. Seit 1937 war es in diesem Jahr das erste Mal dass alle vier Rennflugzeuge gleichzeitig fliegen konnten.

D Day

Der Flugplatz Old Warden selbst ist relativ klein und hat nur Graslandebahnen. Trotzdem können auch grössere Maschinen dort landen. Sieben DC-3 (C-47 Dakota) oder Skytrain wie die DC-3 bei den Amerikanern genannt wurde landeten in Old Warden. Das Thema D-Day, also die vor 75 Jahren erfolgte Landung der Alliierten im besetzten Frankreich, war ominipräsent. Die Dakotas waren eigentlich nicht Teil des Programms aber ein echter Hingucker. Neben den getarnten und mit Invasionsstreifen ausgerüsteten Maschinen hatte es auch zivile DC-3 in PAA oder anderen Bemalungen

Warbirds

Neben den historischen Warbirds aus der Zeit des 1. Weltkrieges waren auch etliche aus dem zweiten Weltkrieg vertreten. Das Programm von Shuttleworth umfasst praktisch alle Maschinen seit dem Beginn der Fliegerei bis heute. Interessant ist der Umstand, dass auch Hubschrauber aus den 60er und 70er Jahren heute als „Warbirds“ im Showkalender auftauchen.

Das exzellente Flugprogramm, das gut organisiert und von den Freiwilligen des SVAS (Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society) unterstützt wurde, lag unter der Kontrolle des neuen Chefpiloten Paul Stone.

Für mich ist Shuttleworth einer der besten Air Shows. Dies auch und vor allem aufgrund des Rahmenprogramms.
