I came across this airshow purely by chance, having read about a previous one on a website. It is only organised about every three years. As I had long planned a visit to the Swedish Air Force museum, here was a chance to add something to the trip to Sweden.

.

Friday

The airshow was to take place during three days, with the first action taking place on Friday evening at 19:00. Most airshows would long have finished at that time, but in the northern part of Sweden it is still bright. By that time the hot summer weather had changed, the temperature dropped markedly and there were strong winds blowing. Due to this, some of the program points had to be cancelled. There was still enough flying however. As I had guessed, many participants are not usually seen outside of Scandinavia.

Nightflight

The laser and pyrotechnics only featured on Friday evening. Now this was something new, fireworks fired off from aircraft. The aircraft used for this display varied from gliders to the tiny Thorp 18 or the massive converted Grumman AGcat used by Scandinavian airshows.

Air Force Participation

The Hercules called TP84 in Swedish service only flew on Friday, while the JAS 39 Gripen from F 21 was to appear on all three days. The Saab 105 or SK60 from the flying school at Malmen only flew on Saturday.

Warbirds

There were a good number of aircraft in this group. Some like the Yak, the Fieseler Storch, the Mustang or the Fokker DVII have been visiting other airshows further south already.  Others like the Tiger Moths or the Norseman seem to be confined to Scandinavia. Even the Douglas DC-3 called Congo Queen I had never seen before.

Historic Flight

This was of course the part of the program that promised to be the most interesting with aircraft like the Saab 29 Tunnan or the Saab 17 dive bomber. Alas, the Saab 17 and 29 didn’t appear. The Tunnan being planned for Sunday only was prevented by the bad weather, while the Saab 17 didn’t show up without any reason given. According to other photographers, it seems to be an elusive bird that hasn’t been seen for quite a while.

At least on Saturday the Vampire Trainer and the Saab Draken did fly. Also the tiny HKP5 helicopters took part in the flying display.
