Scandinavian aerobatics

Of all the participants, only Johan Gustafssons glider has been seen before at European airshows. All other participants were new to me. This was especially true for the Catwalk. So far I had only seen one lady on a Stearman Biplane. Here however, were two of them on a converted Grumman AGCat. In addition they were dressed and made up as cats to justify the name.

Sukhoj

Jurgis Kairys showed how much brute force is contained in his Sukhoi Su-31. The whole aircraft just hanging on its propeller, for any length of time. The other noteworthy feature of his display was the amount of smoke he generated.

Aerobatic teams

The best known team were of course the Royal Jordanian Falcons, who found their way up into the north. It was probably a long way only for one display.

A team that I have never seen before is the Team 50 flying Saab Safirs. Another team that was new to me were the Baltic Bees from Latvia with their L-39 Albatros. Being a jet team, they are not only faster but also consequently take up much more of the sky than the other teams. Their unique and pleasing to look at colour scheme which is designed to resemble a Bee is quite nice.

The flying Bulls aerobatic team flew a quite perfect routine. The interesting thing is that they arrived without any supporting staff. The pilots themselves had to tie down their aircraft, unlike the Jordanians who came with a van and their engineers.

Rindrops are falling

The rain started during the night already. It was this slow steady rain that doesn’t stop.  Indeed it still rained in the morning without any sign of lessening. I therefore decided to head south again. As there was enough time and I was curious if there would be any flying I decided to have a last look at the airfield.

Most of the flying was cancelled, but there were quite some people sitting in the rain and looking at the flying that took place. The Saab Viggen really proved that it is an all weather fighter by giving a good display despite the rain and the low clouds.

It was a pity that the bad weather messed up the flying on Sunday as the organisers would have deserved better for all the work they did.
