Die RTAF Tactical Air Operations Competition für 2021 fand am 24. Dezember 2020 wieder auf dem Chandy Schiessplatz in der Nähe von Chaibadan statt. Diese Veranstaltung wurde trotz vermehrten Covid-19 Faellen in Thailand abgehalten, aber entsprechende Vorsichtsmassnahmen wurden getroffen und alle Teilnehmer/Zuschauer trugen Gesichtsmasken. Die Zuschauer waren dieses Jahr limitiert und bestanden vor allem aus RTAF Personal, einigen geladenen Gästen sowie etwa zwei Dutzend lokale Media Vertretern. Die Schulklassen aus nahegelegenen Schulen waren dieses Jahr wegen Corona Restriktionen nicht anwesend. Die eingeladenen Gäste sowie die Medien Vertreter wurden mit Bussen von der RTAF Base in Don Muang nach Chandy, etwa 250 km nördlich von Bangkok, transportiert und auch wieder zurückgebracht.

Zur allgemeinen Enttäuschung der anwesenden Fotografen wurde die Vorführungen schon auf 10 Uhr morgens angesetzt anstatt wie üblich um 11 Uhr was eine weitere Verschlechterung der Lichtverhältnisse bedeutete. Das Problem in Chandy ist, dass ein grosser Teil der Flugvorführungen in totalem Gegenlicht stattfindet, was die Identifikation und die Verfolgung der anfliegenden Maschinen sehr erschwerte. Das Wetter war während der Vorführung sonnig was weitere Probleme mit dem Licht mit sich brachten. Trotz den nicht idealen Verhältnissen ist dieser Event immer interessant, da eine solche Veranstaltung in Asien Seltenheitswert hat.
Der neue RTAF Commander, Air Chief Marshal Airbull Suttiwan, traf in einem Konvoi von zwei Skikorsky S-92 Helikoptern aus Don Muang kommend auf dem Übungsplatz ein. Eine kurze Zeremonie folgte, während der die Kommandanten (Wing Commanders) der verschiedenen RTAF Basen dem Commander vorgestellt wurden. Nach einigen kurzen Ansprachen eröffnete der Commander die Übung.
Die folgenden Flugzeuge (in der Reihenfolge des Programms) nahmen in diesem Jahr an der Übung teil:
1 x F-16A (Eröffnungs-Tiefflug), 1 x Diamond D-42 (Vorbeiflug), 1 x Gripen and 1 x F-5E Tigris (Bomben Abwurf), 1 x Gripen (Laser Bomben Abwurf), 1 x F-16 and 1 x F-5 E (Bombenabwurf), 2 x Alphajet (Raketenabschuss), 1 x Lockheed C-130H Hercules (Cargo Abwurf), 1 x Basler BT-67 (Wasser Abwurf), 1 x Eurocopter EC-725 (Aufbau eines Feld-Spitals), Formations-Vorbeiflug von 2x Gripen and 2x F-5E Tigris, 2x Alphajet, 6x F-16, and 4x T-50, 1 x Lockheed C-130H Hercules (Tiefflug Passage) und 1 x F-16A and 1 x F-16B (tiefer Überraschungsangriff) zum Abschluss der Übung.

Wie wir schon in vergangenen Jahren erlebten demonstrierten die RTAF Piloten einmal mehr ihre grosse Zielgenauigkeit bei allen Angriffen. Flares wurden ebenfalls eingesetzt aber nur am Ende der Eröffnungs-Passage und am Ende des Überraschungsangriffes, der den Abschluss der Vorführung signalisierte. Wegen neuen Restriktionen konnten die Piloten ihre Flares erst weit weg vom Übungsplatz einsetzen, was keine dramatischen Flare-Fotos wie in den letzten Jahren mehr ermöglichte.
Hier noch eine Randbemerkung: Infolge der zunehmenden neuen Covid-Faelle in Thailand sind die Flugvorführungen des für den 9. Januar 2021 geplanten Tag des Kindes auf ein unbekanntes Datum verschoben worden.
