Cope Tiger ist eine jährliche Kooperationsübung der Luftwaffen von USA, Singapur und Thailand und findet jeweils im März auf den Royal Thai Air Force Stützpunkten  von Korat, Lopburi (Chandy) und Udon statt. Die Übung umfasste 2013 ungefähr 2’000 Teilnehmer, die 80 Flugzeuge sowie 36 bodengestützte Fliegerabwehr Systeme unterstützten. Gleichzeitig wurden die ärmeren Einwohner in den von der Übung betroffenen Gebieten von mehreren ärztlichen Teams aus den drei Nationen medizinisch betreut.

Im Jahr 2013 wurden eine Anzahl von Journalisten eingeladen, an zwei Tagen diese Übung zu verfolgen, Die Einladung, die auch den Autor beinhaltete, kam erstaunlicherweise von der amerikanischen Botschaft, die auch für den Transport und die Unterkunft in Udon sorgten. Dieser Presse-Event fand am 14. und 15. März 2013 statt. Am ersten Tag wurden wir in einem Minivan der US Botschaft von Bangkok nach Korat gebracht, wo das Hauptkontingent der Cope Tiger Teilnehmer aus USA, Singapur und Thailand stationiert war.

Alle diese Flugzeuge waren am Morgen des 13. März in der Luft. Wir wurden in der Nähe des Starts recht nahe an der Piste platziert, aber der Rotationspunkt war einige hundert Meter vom Standort entfernt, sodass nur Aufnahmen mit ausgefahrenem Fahrwerk möglich waren. Für die Rückkehr der Flugzeuge wurde wiederum der gleiche Standort gewählt. Dies machte es möglich, die Flugzeuge bei der Landung zu verfolgen. Das Wetter war sonnig aber mit etwas Morgendunst - also nicht perfekte Wetterverhältnisse. Aber so gegen 60 Flugzeuge zuerst beim Rollen und dann bei Start und Landung zu verfolgen war doch sehr eindrücklich und laut, vor allem bei den Starts mit Nachbrenner. Um die Mittagszeit wurde die Journalisten Gruppe nach Udon gefahren, aber es war nach der Ankunft zu spät, um noch etwas von den dortigen Aktivitäten mitzubekommen.

Am frühen Morgen des nächsten Tages folgte dann der Transport  auf den militärischen Teil des Flugplatzes Udon, wo die folgenden Flugzeuge parkiert waren:

Überraschenderweise wurde die Journalistengruppe eingeladen, in der C-17 aus Elmendorf eine "heavy cargo extraction" mitzuverfolgen. Der Flug dauerte fast 3 Stunden, da die Crew den Anflug für den Drop einige Male übte bevor sie dann die erste der zwei geladenen Lasten via offene Heckklappe extrahierten. Als die Last draussen war tauchte auf einmal eine zweite C-17 von der Hickman Airbase in Hawaii hinter unserer Maschine auf. Allerdings war sie zu weit weg und flog zu hoch sodass keine befriedigenden  Fotos möglich waren.  Nach etwa 20 Minuten wurde der zweite Abwurf eingeleitet. Die Heckklappe wurde geöffnet und der kleine Pilotschirm ging raus, gefolgt vom Hauptschirm. Leider rissen dieses Mal starke Winde den Schirm ab, sodass die Last nicht abgeworfen werden konnte - also eine kleine Enttäuschung. Aber es war trotzdem ein Erlebnis, mit einer C-17 mal einige Stunden herumzukurven. Das fotografieren von innerhalb der C-17 war relativ schwierig, da die Teilnehmer nicht in der Nähe der offenen Heckklappe, sondern weiter hinten an den Wänden entlang angeschnallt sitzen mussten. Auch war es verboten, während dem Flug den Sitz zu verlassen.

Am frühen Nachmittag gings dann zu den Flugvorbereitungen der A-10 Staffel aus Osan. Dies war einzigartig, weil wir hautnah an die Flugzeuge herankamen, während dem das Bodenpersonal die Maschinen für den Nachmittag-Flug bereit machten. Dies hiess auch, dass wir ungestört aus nächster Distanz alles fotografieren konnten, die Bewaffnung eingeschlossen. Ein tolles und nicht alltägliches Erlebnis.

Die Rückreise nach Bangkok am Nachmittag gestaltete sich dann etwas zeitraubend, denn starker Verkehr und ein grosser Stau trugen dazu bei, dass die Gruppe sehr spät am Abend Bangkok erreichte.

Einen ganz speziellen Dank gebührt der amerikanische Botschaft in Bangkok, deren Personal die Gruppe der Journalisten wahrend den zwei Tagen in exzellenter Manier betreuten. Nicht zu vergessen auch die Leute der Royal Thai Air Force, die den Journalisten auf den zwei Basen auf nette Art und Weise behilflich waren.
