During a press conference on June 4, 2025, the Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Punpakdee Pattanakul announced the decision by the Royal Thai Air Force to purchase 12 Gripen E&F aircrafts from Saab Sweden under the framework of a government to government deal.
ACM Punpakdee declared that this purchase aligns with the RTAF’s strategic vision of building a modern and efficient air force. He remarked that this is not just an aircraft purchase but an investment in security and long-term air sovereignty. The 12 aircrafts are destined to replace the ageing F-16 A/B aircrafts presently being operated by RTAF Wing 1 in Korat.
The decision to purchase the
latest Gripen model in preference over the latest F-16 Block 70/72
offered by the United States clearly shows increased independence by
Thailand when it comes to purchasing weapons for the defense of the
country. The press conference was designed to inform the public in
detail of the reasons and justifications for choosing the Gripen as the
next fighter jet to be operated by
Thailand.

Juni 2025 verkündete der Kommandeur der Königlichen Thailändischen Luftwaffe (RTAF), Luftwaffenchef Marschall Punpakdee Pattanakul, die Entscheidung der RTAF, zwölf Gripen E- und F-Kampfflugzeuge von Saab Schweden im Rahmen eines Regierung-zu-Regierung-Geschäfts zu erwerben.
ACM Punpakdee erklärte, dass dieser Kauf im Einklang mit der strategischen Vision der RTAF stehe, eine moderne und effiziente Luftwaffe aufzubauen. Er betonte, dass es sich nicht nur um einen Flugzeugkauf, sondern um eine Investition in Sicherheit und langfristige Lufthoheit handle. Die zwölf Flugzeuge sollen die alternden F-16 A/B ersetzen, die derzeit von der RTAF-Wing 1 in Korat betrieben werden.
Die Entscheidung, das neueste Gripen-Modell den ebenfalls neuesten F-16 Block 70/72 der USA vorzuziehen, zeigt deutlich das zunehmende Bestreben Thailands, bei Rüstungs-beschaffungen unabhängiger zu agieren. Die Pressekonferenz diente dazu, der Öffentlichkeit die Gründe und Rechtfertigungen für die Auswahl des Gripen als nächstes Kampfflugzeug Thailands im Detail zu erläutern.

The total package will comprise of 12 aircrafts whereof 8 will be Gripen E and 4 will be the twin-seat Gripen F at an estimated cost of 60 Billion THB or slightly less than 2 Billion USD. The purchase will be done in 3 phases over a period of the next 10 to 12 years. The press conference concentrated on giving details of phase 1 of the deal which will encompass 4 aircrafts at a cost of 16 Billion THB.

to this write-up. As deciding reasons for choosing the Gripen E/F, the
RTAF Commander and his key staff stressed the
following points:

The RTAF already successfully operates 11 Gripen C/D aircrafts and their staff is very familiar with the Gripen aircraft. Also, some of the existing infrastructure can be shared with the new aircrafts.

The RTAF has over the years of operating the Gripen C/D developed a very close relationship with Saab and Sweden which makes dealing with their overseas partners easy and convenient.

Thailand has been able to secure very substantial direct and indirect offset deals with Saab and the Swedisch Government which should cover almost 100 % of the cost of the new fighter aircrafts.

Saab and Sweden have agreed to some important sharing of technology know-how.
Das Gesamtpaket umfasst zwölf Flugzeuge, davon acht Gripen E und vier Zweisitzer des Typs Gripen F, zu einem geschätzten Preis von 60 Milliarden THB, was knapp unter 2 Milliarden USD liegt. Die Beschaffung erfolgt in drei Phasen über einen Zeitraum von 10 bis 12 Jahren. Der Schwerpunkt der Pressekonferenz lag auf den Details der Phase 1, welche vier Flugzeuge zu einem Preis von 16 Milliarden THB umfasst.

Die RTAF betreibt bereits erfolgreich elf Gripen C/D-Flugzeuge, und das Personal ist mit dem Gripen bestens vertraut. Zudem kann ein Teil der bestehenden Infrastruktur weitergenutzt werden.

Durch den langjährigen Betrieb der Gripen C/D hat sich eine enge Beziehung zwischen der RTAF und Saab sowie Schweden entwickelt, was die Zusammenarbeit mit den ausländischen Partnern einfach und bequem macht.

Thailand konnte mit Saab und der schwedischen Regierung sehr umfangreiche direkte und indirekte Ausgleichsgeschäfte (Offset-Deals) vereinbaren, die fast 100 % der Kosten der neuen Kampfflugzeuge abdecken sollen.

Saab und Schweden haben einer wichtigen Weitergabe von technologischem Know-how zugestimmt.
The Swedisch government has given their wholehearted support to the Gripen deal between Saab and the RTAF and during the press conference, the Swedish Ambassador to Thailand reassured the RTAF of Sweden’s unreserved support for the deal.
As far as the current status of the proposed deal is concerned, the representative of Saab in Thailand explained that no contract had been signed thus far, and the Swedisch Defence Material Administration (FMV) which handles the deal on the Swedisch side will now follow the next steps in the procurement process.
The Thai side confirmed that official government approval of the amount of 16 Billion THB for tranche 1 of the purchase plan is still outstanding but in view of the support received from the Ministry of Defense, there should be no problem in obtaining the official go-ahead for the proposed deal in due course.
Die schwedische Regierung unterstützt das Gripen-Geschäft mit der RTAF uneingeschränkt, und während der Pressekonferenz bekräftigte der schwedische Botschafter in Thailand die uneingeschränkte Unterstützung Schwedens für das Vorhaben.
Was den aktuellen Stand der geplanten Beschaffung betrifft, erklärte der Saab-Vertreter in Thailand, dass bislang noch kein Vertrag unterzeichnet wurde. Die schwedische Rüstungsbehörde FMV, die auf schwedischer Seite zuständig ist, werde nun die nächsten Schritte im Beschaffungsprozess einleiten.
Die thailändische Seite bestätigte, dass die offizielle Regierungsfreigabe für die erste Tranche im Wert von 16 Milliarden THB noch aussteht. Angesichts der Unterstützung durch das Verteidigungsministerium sei jedoch nicht mit Problemen bei der offiziellen Genehmigung des geplanten Geschäfts zu rechnen.
