Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
12th Avenue and 46th Street, Manhattan, New York City, U.S.

The Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is in New York City. It's located on the banks of the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan (Pier 86 at 46th Street). The museum presents the former aircraft carrier CV-11 USS Intrepid, converted into a museum ship, as well as other historical technical exhibits from the area of the U.S. Naval Forces, Aviation and Space.

In the days when we were young, around 35 years ago, I visited the museum in New York in 1987. In 1990 I visited it again with Andy Herzog. The museum was quite new at that time, it was opened in August 1982.

In addition to the main exhibit, the USS Intrepid, which served in the Pacific during World War II and was used during the Vietnam War and to recover NASA's Mercury and Gemini landing-crafts, many aircraft are displayed as exhibits on the flight deck of the ship. Common types of U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army.

Today there are other aircraft that have nothing to do with naval aviation, such as the Concorde, the Space Shuttle and the Lockheed A-12 in the museum.

The weckend Marines

During my first visit to the USS Intrepid, there weren't not many planes on the deck. I was amazed from one Boeing-Vertoll CH-46Fs that stood on the deck, and was quite new. This helicopter was still in use by the HMM-774 from the U.S.Marines The "weekend warriors" had made a little trip to the USS Intrepid and had just landed on the flight deck.

SS-577 USS Growler

Besides to the USS Intrepid lying the SS-577 USS Growler a submarine with a Regulus cruise missile. At that time I had decided not to visit this submarine.
