Learjet was one of the first companies to manufacture a private, luxury aircraft. Lear's preliminary design was based upon an experimental American military aircraft known as the Marvel, substituting fuselage-mounted turbojet engines for ducted fan turboshaft engines. However, that preliminary design was abandoned and the final Learjet design was instead adapted from an abortive 1950s Swiss ground-attack fighter aircraft, the FFA P-16.

The wing with its distinctive tip fuel tanks and landing gear of the first Learjets were little changed from those used by the fighter prototypes. The original Learjet 23 was a six- to eight-seater and first flew on 7. October 1963.

On 11. February 2021, Bombardier announced the end production of all Learjet aircraft.

Learjet war eines der ersten Unternehmen, das ein privates Luxusflugzeug herstellte. Lears vorläufiger Entwurf basierte auf einem experimentellen amerikanischen Militärflugzeug, das als Marvel bekannt ist und rumpfmontierte Turbojet-Triebwerke anstelle von Mantelgebläse-Turbowellentriebwerken ersetzte. Dieses vorläufige Design wurde jedoch aufgegeben und das endgültige Learjet-Design wurde stattdessen von einem fehlgeschlagenen Schweizer Bodenangriffs-Kampfflugzeug aus den 1950er Jahren, der FFA P-16, übernommen.
Die Tragfläche mit den markanten Spitzentanks und dem Fahrwerk der ersten Learjets war gegen-über den Kampfflugzeug-Prototypen kaum verän-dert. Der ursprüngliche Learjet 23 war ein Sechs- bis Achtsitzer und flog erstmals am 7. Oktober 1963.

Einsatzgeschichte

The plane is designated Transport- Reconnaisance-plane No. 12 (BTL.12 บตล.๑๒).

Die Maschine wird als Transport- Aufklärungs-flugzeug No. 12 (BTL.12 บตล.๑๒)  bezeichnet.

1988 beschaffte die RTAF zwei Gates Learjet für die elektronische Aufklärung. Die Maschinen sind mit einer umfangreichen Sensorausrüstung ver-sehen. Die beiden Learjet wurden von 1988 bis ca. 2004 von der 605 Staffel betrieben. Nach deren Auflösung wurden die Learjet an die 402 Staffel in Thakli weitergegeben.
