The Science and Weapon Systems Development Centre of the Royal Thai Air Force began her RTAF-5 project in 1974 with an intention to use the aircraft as advanced trainer and forward air controller. The first of three prototypes was built in May 1976 and, despite many delays, was completed in 1982. It took two more years to make the aircraft ready to fly and, on October 5, 1984, with Squadron Leader Suntorn Wongnamsant at the control, the plane flew for the first time. The maiden flight lasted 12 minutes and the aircraft reached 85 knots and 1,200 feet. This may be the only flight for the RTAF-5 before the project was abandoned in 1985.
Das Science and Weapon Systems Development Centre of the Royal Thai Air Force begann 1974 mit dem Projekt der RTAF-5 die als vorgeschobener Aufklärer und Fortgeschrittenen-Trainer dienen sollte. 1976 wurde mit dem Bau des ersten von drei Prototypen begonnen der, nach vielen Verzöger-ungen, 1982 beendet wurde. Es brauchte zwei weitere Jahre um den Prototypen Flugbereit zu machen. Am 5. Oktober 1984 fand der Erstflug satt, am Steuer sass Staffelkommandant Suntorn Wongnamsant. Der Erstflug dauerte 12 Minuten und eine Geschwindigkeit von 85 Knoten sowie eine Höhe von 400 Meter wurde erreicht. Dies war der einzige Flug der RTAF-5 bevor das Projekt 1985 eingestellt wurde.
