The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the U.S. Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it first entered service with the Navy in 1961 before it was adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, and by the mid-1960s it had become a major part of their air arms. Phantom production ran from 1958 to 1981 with a total of 5,195 aircraft built, making it the most produced American supersonic military aircraft in history, and cementing its position as an iconic combat aircraft of the Cold War.

The Phantom is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. It can carry more than 8,400 kg of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and various bombs. The F-4, like other interceptors of its time, was initially designed without an internal cannon. Later models incorporated an M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Beginning in 1959, it set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including an absolute speed record and an absolute altitude record.

Die McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II ist ein amerikanischer zweisitziger, zweimotoriger All-wetter Langstrecken berschallabfangjäger und Jagdbomber, der ursprünglich von McDonnell Aircraft für die U.S. Navy entwickelt wurde. Es erwies sich als äusserst anpassungsfähig und wurde erstmals 1961 bei der Navy eingesetzt, bevor es vom U.S. Marine Corps und der U.S. Air Force übernommen wurde und Mitte der 1960er Jahre zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil ihrer Luftwaffe wurde. Die Phantom-Produktion lief von 1958 bis 1981 mit insgesamt 5'195 gebauten Flug-zeugen, was sie zum meistgebauten amerikani-schen Überschall-Militärflugzeug der Geschichte machte und ihre Position als ikonisches Kampfflug-zeug des Kalten Krieges festigte.
Die Phantom ist ein grosser Jäger mit einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von über Mach 2,2. Es kann mehr als 8.400 kg Waffen an neun  Waffenstationen transportieren, darunter Luft-Luft-Raketen, Luft-Boden-Raketen und verschiedene Bomben. Die F-4 wurde wie andere Abfangjäger ihrer Zeit ursprünglich ohne interne Kanone konstruiert. Spätere Modelle enthielten eine M61 Vulcan Gatlingkanone. Ab 1959 stellte sie 15 Weltrekorde für Flugleistung auf, darunter einen absoluten Geschwindigkeitsrekord und einen absoluten Höhenrekord.
