Developed privately by Boeing (Model 81), a single example was purchased by the US Navy as XN2B-1 and with serial A8010 on 21 June 1928. At that time the aircraft had already flown. Its trial with the Fairchild engine was unsatisfactory, and on 10 January 1929 it was refitted by Wright Aeronautical with a 160 hp Wright J-6-5 engine. Despite increased performance, it was not ordered into production.
Das von Boeing (Modell 81) privat entwickelte Modell wurde am 21. Juni 1928 von der US Navy als XN2B-1 und der Serienummer A8010 gekauft. Zu dieser Zeit war das Flugzeug bereits geflogen. Die Tests mit dem Fairchild-Motor war unbe-friedigend, und am 10. Januar 1929 wurde es von Wright Aeronautical mit einem 160 PS Wright J-6-5-Motor umgerüstet. Trotz erhöhter Leistung wurde es nicht in die Produktion übernommen.
