The Curtiss MF was a greatly
improved two-seat training flying-boat that was evolved from the Model
F.Structurally, the MF was more like the HS design than the F, but it
was in the weight-power-size class of the F and was intended as a
replacement for it.
A very prominent feature of the MF was the use of sponsons on each side
of the forward hull as introduced on the America-Class and used on many
subsequent flying-boats. Initial powerplant was the 100 hp Curtiss OXX-3
but experimental installations were made with the 150 hp Wright-Hispano
and the 150 hp Curtiss K-6, a new six-cylinder inline engine.
Curtiss built six MFs at Garden City on one U.S. Navy order and sixteen of 47 on a second order that was cancelled by the Armistice. The Navy built later 80 more in the Naval Aircraft Factory.
Die Curtiss MF war eine stark verbesserte version des zweisitziges Trainingsflugboot, das aus dem Modell F entwickelt wurde. Strukturell war der MF eher ein HS-Design als die F, aber sie war in der Gewichts- und Größenklasse der F und wurde auch als Ersatz für diese vorgesehen.
Ein sehr wichtiges Merkmal der MF war der Einsatz von Ausegern auf jeder Seite des vorderen Rumpfes ähnlich der Amerika-Klasse und folgenden Flugboten. Anfänglich wurde ein 100 PS Curtiss OXX-3 Motor verwendet aber es wurde auch Versionen mit dem 150 PS Wright-Hispano und dem 150 PS Curtiss K-6 Sechszylinder -Reihen-motor gebaut.
Curtiss baute sechs MFs bei Garden City aufgund einer Bestellung der U.S. Navy und sechzehn von 47 aufgrund einer zweiten Bestellung. Nach dem Waffenstillstand wurde die Produktion eingestellt. Die Navy baute später 80 weitere in der Naval Aircraft Factory.
