Entwicklung

The C-118 Liftmaster / R6D- was the military version of the commercial DC-6 passenger plane. Douglas designed four basic variants of the DC-6: the basic DC-6, and the longer fuselage, higher-gross-weight, longer range versions the DC-6A with large cargo doors forward and aft of the wing on the port (left hand side) with a cargo floor; the DC-6B, designed for passenger work, with passenger doors only and a lighter floor; and the DC-6C convertible, with the two cargo doors and removable passenger seats.

The military version, essentially similar to the DC-6A, was designated the USAF C-118 Liftmaster; the USN R6D version used the more powerful R-2800-CB-17 engines.

Die C-118 Liftmaster / R6D- war die militärische Version des  kommerzielle Passagierflugzeuges DC-6. Douglas entwarf vier Grundvarianten der DC-6: Die normale DC-6 und eine Version mit längeren Rumpf, höherem Brutto-Gewicht, eine größere Reichweite, DC-6A, die als Transportflugzeug gedacht war, die erfolgreichste Version, die DC-6B, war wiederum ein Passagierflugzeug, und die DC-6C eine Kombination von beidem.
 

Die militärische Version war im Wesentlichen ähnlich wie die DC-6A und erhielt von der USAF die Bezeichnung C-118 Liftmaster, die USN Version R6D verwendet die stärkeren R-2800-CB-17-Motoren.
