The D-558-1 Skystreak was built for the U.S. Navy to investigate the characteristics of transonic speeds. Three were built with serials 37970 - 37972 and the first flight was on 28 May 1947. The programme continued until June 1953 by which time aircraft 37971 had been lost on 3 May 1948. The other two aircraft went to NACA as 141 and 142 respectively. They are now on display at NAS Pensacola and USMC Quantico.   

These aircraft never received a formal Navy designation as, the aircraft were not considered a military airplane and therefore could not fit into the Navy’s designation scheme. The contractor’s model number was accepted as its designation.

Die D-558-1 Skystreak wurde für die U.S. Navy gebaut, um die Eigenschaften der Schallge-schwindigkeit zu untersuchen. Drei Maschinen wurden gebaut mit den Seriennummern 37970 - 37972. Der Erstflug fand am 28. Mai 1947 statt. Das Programm wurde bis Juni 1953 weitergeführt, wobei 37971 am 3. Mai 1948 verloren ging. Die beiden anderen Maschinen ging an NACA als 141 bzw. 142 über. Sie sind heute in NAS Pensacola und USMC Quantico ausgestellt.

Diese Maschinen haben nie eine formelle Navy Bezeichnung erhalten, da sie als nicht  militärisches Flugzeug angesehen wurden und nicht in das Bezeichnung Schema der Navy passten- Stattdessen wurde die Modellnummer des Herstellers übernommen.
