The Alenia C-27J Spartan is a military transport aircraft developed and manufactured by Leonardo's Aircraft Division (formerly Alenia Aermacchi). It is an advanced derivative of Alenia earlier G.222, equipped with the engines and various other systems also used on the larger Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. In addition to the standard transport configuration, specialized variants of the C-27J have been developed for maritime patrol, search and rescue, C3 ISR (command, control, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance), fire support/ground-attack and electronic warfare missions.

Die Alenia C-27J Spartan ist ein militärisches Transportflugzeug, das von Leonardos Aircraft Division (ehemals Alenia Aermacchi) entwickelt und hergestellt wurde. Es ist ein fortschrittliches Derivat von Alenia früherer G.222, ausgestattet mit den Motoren und verschiedenen anderen Syste-men, die auch auf der größeren Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules verwendet werden. Neben der Standard-Transportkonfiguration wurden spez-ielle Varianten des C-27J für Seepatrouille, Suche und Rettung, C3 ISR (Command, Control, Com-munications, Intelligence, Überwachung and Auf-klärung), Feuerunterstützung/Bodenangriff und elektronische entwickelt Kriegsführungsmissionen.

HC-27J

The HC-27J is the modified surveillance variant for the U.S. Coast Guard. 14 retired C-27Js were rebuilt as HC-27J aircraft for maritime patrol, surveillance, medium-range search and rescue, drug and migrant interdiction, and disaster response.

In March of 2012 the U.S. Coast Guard did an evaluation as to the feasibility of taking over the existing C-27J aircraft from the U.S. Air Force.  In early 2013 the Air Force completely shut down the C-27J program and began the decommissioning and storage of the existing aircraft.  The Coast Guard wanted all 21 of the C-27Js, The U.S Special Operations Command wanted seven and the U.S. Forest Service wanted seven for use as aerial tankers. In October of 2013 the DOD   assigned seven C-27Js to the Special Operations Command. The Coast Guard, Forest Service, and the Air Force worked out an arrangement whereby 14 C-27Js would go to the Coast Guard. Seven Coast Guard C-130H aircraft scheduled for wing box replacement and depot maintenance would go to the Forest Service.

The Coast Guard is regenerating and modifying the HC-27 to enhance the aircraft’s  capability to detect, classify and identify maritime targets. A sensor package similar to the HC-144 and C-130s is installed.

Im März 2012 hat die U.S. Coast Guard die Möglichkeit einer Übernahme der bestehenden C-27J Flugzeuge von der U.S. Luftwaffe geprüft. Anfang 2013 stellte die Air Force das C-27J Pro-gramm vollständig ein und begann mit der Still-legung und Lagerung der bestehenden Flugzeuge. Die Küstenwache wollte alle 21 C-27J, das U.S. Special Operations Command sieben und das U.S. Forest Service sieben für den Einsatz als Luft-tanker. Im Oktober 2013 ordnete das DOD dem Special Operations Command sieben C-27J zu. Die Küstenwache, der Forstdienst und die Luftwaffe arbeiteten eine Vereinbarung aus, wonach 14 C-27Js an die Küstenwache gehen würden. Sieben C-130H Flugzeuge der Küstenwache, die für den Austausch der Flügelkästen und die Wartung im Depot vorgesehen sind, würden an den Forest Service gehen. Die Küstenwache regeneriert und modifiziert die HC-27J, um die Fähigkeit des Flug-zeugs zu verbessern, maritime Ziele zu erkennen, zu klassifizieren und  identifizieren. Ein Sensor-paket ähnlich dem der HC-144 und C-130s ist installiert wuorden.
