Curtiss HS-2L

Entwicklung
The Curtiss HS- was a single-engined patrol flying boat built for the US Navy during World War I. Large numbers were built from 1917 to 1919, with the type being used to carry out anti-submarine patrols from bases in France from June 1918. The H14 was a conventional unequal-span, unstaggered biplane, powered by two 100 Hp pusher Curtiss OXX engines mounted between the wings.
The prototype was converted to a single-engined aircraft powered by a 200 hp Curtiss V-X-X engine, also in a pusher configuration, being redesignated as the Curtiss HS-1. The prototype was again re-engined with the Liberty 12 engine, becoming the HS-1L.
Curtiss produced an increased-span version, the HS-2 with span increased by 13.66 m and an additional set of interplane struts, giving four-bay wings rather than the three-bay wings of the HS-1L.
The HS-1L and HS-2L were built in vast quantities: 675 by Curtiss themselves, and nearly as many again by various contractors.
Die Curtiss HS- war eine einmotoriges Patrouillen- Flugboot für die US Navy während des Ersten Weltkrieges das in großer Zahl gebaut von 1917 bis 1919 gebaut wurde. Mit dem Typ wurden von Juni 1918 an, Anti-U-Boot-Patrouillen von Stützpunkten in Frankreich aus Durchgeführt. Die H14 war eine konventioneller Doppeldecker umit ngleichen Spannweite, der von zwei 100 PS Curtiss OXX Motoren angetrieben wurde, die zwischen den Flügeln montiert waren.
Der Prototyp wurde später in einem einmotorige Version mit einem 200 PS Curtiss V-X-X Motor umgebaut und als Curtiss HS-1 bezeichnet. Der Prototyp wurde nochmals umgebaut und mit einem Liberty 12 Motor ausgerüstet und so als HS-1L bezeichnet.
Curtiss baute eine Version einer mit größeren Spannweite von 13.66m und zusätzlichen Streben.
Die HS-1L und HS-2L wurden in großen Stückzahlen von Curtiss selbst produziert, fast die gleiche Anzahl wurde von verschieden andern Herstellern gebaut.

Einsatzgeschichte
Die U.S. Coast Guard übernahn 1919 nach dem Krieg vier Curtiss HS-2L Flugboote von der U.S. Navy. Die Maschinen wurden von der Station Moreham City North Carolina aus eingesetzt. Die vier Maschinen waren bis 1926 im Dienst.
