The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw (company
model number S-55) was a multi-purpose helicopter used by the U.S. Army
and USAF. It was also license-built by Westland Aircraft as the Westland
Whirlwind in the United Kingdom. Development of the H-19 was initiated privately by Sikorsky without government sponsorship. The helicopter was initially designed as a testbed for several novel design concepts intended to provide greater load-carrying ability in combination with easy maintenance. The first customer was the USAF, which ordered five YH-19 aircraft for evaluation; the YH-19's first flight was on 10 November 1949. This was followed by delivery of the first YH-19 to the USAF on 16 April 1950 and delivery of the first HO4S-1 helicopter to the U.S. Navy on 31 August 1950. |

Einsatzgeschichte |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Late in 1951, the U.S. Coast
Guard acquired the Sikorsky HO4S-2G helicopter for search and rescue
duty. Seven helicopters were obtained on the initial order. In 1953 the
first of 24 upgraded HO4S-3Gs came aboard. Ten additional HRS-3 were
obtained from the Navy in 1961. The HO4S- helicopters extended the Coast Guard’s rescue capabilities far beyond what was imagined 20 years prior. Although underpowered by today’s standards it was the first operational helicopter capable of carrying multiple survivors in a cabin and carry heavy loads. It had a rescue hoist capable of lifting 180 Kg. It proved, beyond all doubt, the capabilities and value of the helicopter for Coast Guard operations. They performed numerous rescues during the next decade, some best described as miraculous, within parameters never before achieved. |
Ende 1951
erwarb die U.S. Coast Guard den Hubschrauber Sikorsky HO4S-2G für Such- und
Rettungsdienste. Bei der Erstbestellung wurden sieben Hubschrauber
beschafft. 1953 kam die erste von 24 aufgerüsteten HO4S-3Gs an Bord. 1961
wurden zehn weitere HRS-3 von der Marine beschafft. |
