The Stearman Model 75 is a
biplane used as a military trainer aircraft, of which at least 10,626
were built in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. Stearman
Aircraft became a subsidiary of Boeing in 1934. Widely known as the
Boeing Stearman, it served as a primary trainer for the United States
Army Air Forces, the United States Navy (as the NS and N2S) throughout
World War II. After the conflict was over, thousands of surplus aircraft
were sold on the civilian market. |
Das Stearman Model 75 ist ein
Doppeldecker, der als militärisches Schulflugzeug eingesetzt wurde und von
dem in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren mindestens 10.626 in den Vereinigten
Staaten gebaut wurden. Stearman Aircraft wurde 1934 eine Tochtergesellschaft
von Boeing. Weithin bekannt als Boeing Stearman, diente es während des
gesamten Weltkriegs als Haupttrainer der United States Army Air Forces, der
United States Navy (als NS und N2S). Nach Beendigung des Konflikts wurden
Tausende überzählige Flugzeuge auf dem zivilen Markt verkauft.
Es wurde umgangssprachlich als „gelbe Gefahr“ aufgrund seiner überwiegend gelben Farbgebung bezeichnet. |

At the end of WWII the U.S. Coast Guard received 11 N2S-3 series machines but only 10 were actually turned over to the Coast Guard while one machine, although designated for the Coast Guard, was retained by the U.S. Navy at NAS Corpus Christi. The first N2S-3 was turned over to the Coast Guard on March 11, 1946. All were returned by September 1947 as the evaluation pre-flight program was discontinued. |
Am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs erhielt die US-Küstenwache 11 Maschinen der N2S-3 Serie, aber nur 10 wurden tatsächlich an die Coast Guard übergeben, während eine Maschine, obwohl sie für die Coast Guard bestimmt war, von der U.S. Navy bei NAS Corpus Christi zurückbehalten wurde.
