The de Havilland DH.103 Hornet, developed by de Havilland, was a fighter aircraft driven by two piston engines. It further exploited the wooden construction techniques that had been pioneered by the de Havilland Mosquito. Development of the Hornet had started during the Second World War as a private venture. The aircraft was to conduct long range fighter operations in the Pacific Theatre against the Empire of Japan but the war ended before the Hornet reached operational squadron status. |

The Sea Hornet was a naval adaptation of the RAF Hornet F.3. It was fitted with folding wings and had provision for deck arrester and RATO gear. Air-draulic shock-absorber legs replaced the rubber-in-compression legs to eliminate bounce in carrier landings. Three versions were built as: the Sea Hornet F.20 carrier-based medium-range single-seat fighter/reconnaissance/strike aircraft, capable of carrying eight 27kg rockets, bombs, mines and drop-tanks; Sea Hornet NF.21 carrier-based two-seat night fighter/reconnaissance/strike aircraft fitted with an A.I. radar scanner in a thimble radome in the nose; and Sea Hornet PR.22 carrier-based medium-range photographic-reconnaissance version of the F.20. The F.20 first entered service with No.801 Squadron, FAA and joined HMS Implacable in 1949. A total of 200 Sea Hornets were built. |
Die Sea Hornet war eine Marineversion der RAF Hornet F.3. Sie war mit klappbaren Flügeln ausgestattet und verfügte über eine Vorrichtung für Deckssicherungsgeräte und RATO-Ausrüstung. Die Beine mit hydraulischen Stossdämpfern er-setzten die Gummikompressionsbeine, um das Aufprallen bei Trägerlandungen zu verhindern. Es wurden drei Versionen gebaut: die Sea Hornet F.20 als trägergestütztes einsitziges Jagd-, Aufklärungs- und Angriffsflugzeug mit mittlerer Reichweite, das acht 27 kg schwere Raketen, Bomben, Minen und Abwurftanks transportieren konnte; die Sea Hornet NF.21 als trägergestütztes zweisitziges Nachtjagd-, Aufklärungs- und Angriffsflugzeug, das mit einem A.I.-Radarscanner in einem Fingerhut-Radom in der Nase ausgestattet war; und die Sea Hornet PR.22 als trägergestützte Mittelstrecken-Fotoaufklärungs-version der F.20. Die F.20 wurde zunächst bei der No. 801 Squadron der FAA in Dienst gestellt und kam 1949 zur HMS Implacable. Insgesamt wurden 200 Sea Hornets gebaut. |

On 1. June 1947, 801
Squadron was reformed to become the first squadron to operate the Sea
Hornet, based at RNAS Ford. Further Sea Hornet deliveries were attached
to various Naval Squadrons, including three which were attached to 806
NAS in 1948 which, along with a Vampire and two Sea Furies, were
embarked on HMCS Magnificent for a tour of North America in 1948. |
