The Widgeon was originally designed for the civil market. It is smaller but otherwise similar to Grumman's earlier G-21 Goose, and was produced from 1941 to 1955. The first prototype flew in 1940, and the first production aircraft went to the US Navy as an anti-submarine aircraft. |

The Fleet Air Arm received 15 Grumman J4F-2 Widgeon I. These started to be delivered to the RN for intended communications in the West Indies area. The first FP455 was delivered in October 1943 and most sent to Brunswick between March 1944 till April 1945. 738 NAS at Lewiston started to be equipped in July 1944. Gosling were based at the USNAS Air Training Centre, Pensacola from August till April 1945 for the Senior British Naval Officer. Most Goslings were returned to U.S. Navy charge in December 1945 One of the final Grumman Gosling in RN service, was numbered JS996. It was was based at Nassau in 1943, and later used at the Foreign Commission, Miami in February 1946 as the Admirals Barg |
Die Fleet Air Arm erhielt 15 Grumman J4F-2 Widgeon I. Diese begannen mit der Lieferung an die RN für die beabsichtigte Kommunikation in der Region Westindien. Die erste FP455 wurde im Oktober 1943 ausgeliefert und die meisten zwischen März 1944 und April 1945 nach Bruns-wick geschickt. 738 NAS in Lewiston begannen im Juli 1944 mit der Ausrüstung. Die Gosling war von August bis April 1945 für einen leitenden britischer Marineoffizier im USNAS Air Training Centre in Pensacola stationiert. Die meisten Goslings wurden im Dezember 1945 an die U.S. Navy zurückgegeben. Eine der letzten Grumman Gosling im RN-Dienst trug die Nummer JS996. Sie war 1943 in Nassau stationiert und wurde später im Februar 1946 bei der Foreign Commission in Miami als Admirals Maschine eingesetzt |
