1936
- 1940
No.716 (Catapult) Flight formed on 15. July 1936 from part of No.443
(Catapult) Flight for ships of the 6th Cruiser Squadron in the South
Africa Station, Initially equipped with Opreys for use in HMS
Amphion, these began to be replaced by Seafoxes in October 1937 when
HMS Neptune arrived. RAF Mount Batten was used as a shore base when
in Home waters, until being replaced by RNAS Lee-on-Solent on 1.
January 1938. By the outbreak of war the unit had achieved Squadron
status and was using HMNB Simonstown as a shore base, but on 21.
January 1940 it was disbanded into 700 NAS.
1944
- 1945
On 28. June 1944 716 NAS reformed at RNAS Eastleigh as the
School Safety Equipment. Equipped with a miscellany of aircraft
which included a Wellington, Barracuda, Corsair and some Sea Otters
it gave instruction in Air Sea Rescue techniques, and carried out
developnent work on equipnent. A detachment of the squadron
joined HMS Ruler at Greenock in January 1945 for a fev days.
716 NAS disbanded on 1. September 1945. |
