History

The squadron was formed at Worthy Down in September 1940 as a fighter squadron with Fulmar Is, three embarked on HMS Pegasus in December for fighter catapult operations till February 1941 after which the whole squadron embarked on HMS Furious for convoy duties.

In April 1941 the squadron was re-equipped with Fulmar IIs and joined HMS Ark Royal for Malta convoy duties in July and September, during which time 15 enemy aircraft were destroyed, shared with 806 NAS, another probable destroyed and 4 damaged.

Four squadron aircraft survived the torpedoing of HMS Ark Royal in November 1941 and flew to North Front, Gibraltar, where Fulmars and Sea Hurricanes joined the re-equipped squadron for convoys duties with HMS Argus.

In June 1942 squadron aircraft were embarked on HMS Argus and HMS Eagle for relief convoys to Malta in operation Harpoon. 4 Italian aircraft were shot down and 5 squadron aircraft lost.

The squadron was the first to receive Seafires, in June 1942, joining HMS Furious in August 1941 and subsequently took part in the North African landings, shooting down 2 French aircraft and damaging 2 others, along with 2 additional aircraft on the ground.

Back in the UK in March 1943 the squadron undertook Army cooperation support training, and embarked on HMS Indomitable in May 1943 to provide cover for the Sicily landings until the ship was damaged by a torpedo in July when the squadron was transferred to HMS Battler to provide cover for the Salerno landings. The squadron returned home in HMS Hunter, subsequently joining the 4th Naval Fighter Wing and taking over part of 808 NAS in February 1944.

Squadron detachments were lent to the Desert Air Force in Italy for several weeks in April 1944, then the whole squadron took part in the South of France Operation Dragoon landings in HMS Hunter in August 1944, when the squadron inflicted considerable damage to locomotives and road transport.

In March 1945 the squadron re-embarked on HMS Hunter for the Eastern Fleet, providing cover during the re-occupation of Rangoon, and shipping strikes in the Andaman Sea, returning home soon after VJ day.
