History

The Squadron was first formed in December 1941 as a Swordfish torpedo bomber reconnaissance squadron at RNAS Lee-on-Solent, embarking on HMS Biter in September 1942 to take part in the landings in North Africa from HMS Biter and HMS Avenger, returning to the UK on HMS Argus in December 1942.
In February 1943 the squadron joined 16 Group RAF Coastal Command at Thorney Island for operations in the English Channel. In June the squadron added a fighter flight of 6 Seafire L.IIC’s, the combined squadron embarked on HMS Stalker for Gibraltar in July 1943, where the Seafires transferred to 880 NAS and the Swordfish returning to Machrihanish in October 1943, moving to Maydown in December 1943 intended for MAC-ship duties, but with changes in policy the squadron was merged as part of 836 squadron and ceased to exist in January 1944.
The squadron was reformed in April 1944 aboard HMS Activity with 3 Swordfish IIs from 836 NAS and a fighter flight of 7 Wildcat Vs from 816 and 819 squadrons, to carry out convoy duties to Arctic Russia, and subsequently also in the Atlantic, and to Gibraltar. Finally returning to RNAS Maydown and disbanding at RNAS Eglington in September 1944.
