History

In March 1942, the squadron formed from the Royal Navy Fighter Flight at Fuka South (LG.16) in North Africa, with 12 Fulmar IIs for Canal Zone defence and shipping protection.
Operations were under the control of No 234 Wing RAF and subsequently to 252 Wing RAF in June 1942when the squadron moved first to Dekheila and subsequently Fayid and Hurghada.
Meanwhile two flights moved to operate under No 250 Wing RAF in Syria, at Abu Zenim and Ras Gharib, all returning by November 1942.
Subsequently, operations were carried out in the Western Desert until disbanding at El Daba (LG 104) in February 1943.
In April 1944, the squadron reformed at Colombo Racecourse as a Fighter squadron with 10 Seafire L.IICs and F.IIIs, and subsequently embarked on HMS Atheling for offensive sweeps in the Bay of Bengal. After the loss of the CO L/C DAE Holbrook RN in an air accident, the squadron was disbanded at Puttalam in July 1944.
In June 1945 the squadron reformed at Woodvale with 6 Hellcat Is and II(PR)s, intended for the British Pacific Fleet, however it did nor embark on HMS Trouncer until after VJ-day, in mid September 1945, but immediately disbanded the next day.
