Fairey Swordfish

Entwicklung
The Fairey Swordfish was a
biplane torpedo bomber designed by the Fairey Aviation Company.
Originating in the early 1930s, the Swordfish, nicknamed "Stringbag",
was operated by the FAA, in addition to having been equipped by the RAF.
In 1933 Fairey commenced development of an entirely new three-seat naval
aircraft, intended for the twin roles of aerial reconnaissance and
torpedo bomber. Receiving the internal designation of T.S.R. I, standing
for Torpedo-Spotter-Reconnais-sance I, the proposed design adopted a
biplane configuration and a single 645 hp Bristol Pegasus IIM radial
engine as its powerplant. Development of the T.S.R. I was in parallel to
Fairey's activities upon Air Ministry Specification S.9/30. On 17. April
1934, the prototype T.S.R II performed its maiden flight.
In early 1936, an initial production contract for 68 Swordfish aircraft
was received, as the Swordfish I. On 18. August 1944, production of the
Swordfish was terminated; the last aircraft to be delivered, a Swordfish
III, was delivered that day. Almost 2,400 aircraft had been built.
Die Fairey Swordfish war ein
Doppeldecker-Torpedobomber, der von der Fairey Aviation Company entworfen
wurde. Ursprünglich in den frühen 1930er Jahren, wurde die Swordfish, mit
dem Spitznamen "Stringbag", von der FAA betrieben, zusätzlich zu Einheiten
der RAF.
1933 begann Fairey mit der Entwicklung eines völlig neuen dreisitzigen
Marineflugzeugs, das für die Doppelrolle als Luftaufklärer und
Torpedo-bomber bestimmt war. Erhalt der internen Bezeich-nung T.S.R. I, das
für Torpedo-Spotter-Reconnais-sance I steht, nahm das vorgeschlagene Design
eine Doppeldecker-Konfiguration und einen einzigen 645 PS starken Bristol
Pegasus IIM-Sternmotor auf. Entwicklung des T.S.R. Ich war parallel zu
Faireys Aktivitäten bezüglich Air Ministry Specification S.9/30. Am 17.
April 1934 absolvierte der Prototyp T.S.R II seinen Jungfernflug.
Anfang 1936 wurde ein
erster Produktionsvertrag für 68 Swordfish-Flugzeuge als Swordfish I. Am 18.
August 1944 wurde die Produktion des Swordfish eingestellt; Das letzte
ausgelieferte Flugzeug, eine Swordfish III, wurde an diesem Tag
ausgeliefert. Fast 2.400 Flugzeuge wurden gebaut.
