Entwicklung
Development of the H-19 was initiated privately by Sikorsky without government sponsorship. The helicopter was initially designed as a testbed for several novel design concepts intended to provide greater load-carrying ability in combination with easy maintenance.
The first customer was the USAF, which ordered five YH-19 aircraft for evaluation; the YH-19's first flight was on 10 November 1949. This was followed by delivery of the first YH-19 to the USAF on 16 April 1950 and delivery of the first HO4S-1 helicopter to the U.S. Navy on 31 August 1950.
Die Entwicklung der H-19 wurde von Sikorsky ohne staatliche Förderung privat initiiert. Der Helikopter wurde ursprünglich als Testmaschine für mehrere neuartige Konstruktionskonzepte entwickelt, die eine größere Tragfähigkeit in Verbindung mit einfacher Wartung ermöglichen sollten.

Operational history
Einsatzgeschichte
These helicopters would be the main operational helicopters of the squadron in its very early years. The men of the 1st Helicopter Squadron were the pioneers for the later helicopter airmen and squadrons of the VNAF. In 1963, the squadron was redesignated the 211th Squadron, and would continue to serve the republic through 1975.

Hubschrauber-Staffel der vietnamesischen Luftwaffe wurde im April 1956 in
Tan Son Nhut gegründet. Das Geschwader hatte zunächst keine Hubschrauber. 10 HRS-3 wurden von den Franzosen übernommen später wurden noch vier weitere
Maschinen geliefert.
Diese Hubschrauber wurden in den ersten Jahren die wichtigsten operativen
Hubschrauber der Staffel. Die Männer der 1. Hubschrauber-Staffel waren die
Pioniere für die späteren Hubschrauber-Flieger und -Staffeln der VNAF. Im
Jahr 1963 wurde die Staffel der 211. Squadron umbenannt und diente der
Republik bis 1975.
