During my
recent visit to the South African Air Force Museum (see separate report
on this website) I was fortunate in meeting Russel Dixon who organized
for me to be able to join the SAAF Museum Photographic Club at the next
flying training day.
These flying training days are held on the first Saturday of the month
and their purpose is to keep the pilots rated on type and train new
pilots. The flying days are not air shows as there is no display flying.
However, there are always opportunities to take good pictures of some
rare aircraft. |
Während
meines kürzlichen Besuches des Museums der Südafrikanischen Luftwaffe
(siehe den Report auf dieser Website) hatte ich das Glück, Russel Dixon
kennenzulernen. Dieser organisierte für mich den Besuch der nächsten
Flug Trainingstage zusammen mit dem SAAF Museum Photographic Club.
Diese Flug Trainingstage finden am ersten Samstag des Monats statt. Ihr
Ziel ist es neue Piloten auszubilden und die bestehenden
Typenqualifikationen zu erhalten. Diese Trainigstage sind keine Airshows.
Es gibt keine speziellen Flugvorführungen. Trotzdem gibt es immer die
Möglichkeit gute Fotos von seltenen Typen zu schiessen. |

During my visit there was a
lot of extra flying with the Puma and the Alouette III giving pleasure
flights to the members of the Mercedes and Porsche club that had made a
generous donation to the museum.
Normally the flying takes place from 9am to 1pm during the museums
opening hours which are from 9am to 3pm.
I was fortunate in getting in with the SAAFMPC already at 6am before
sunrise. That way it was possible to take pictures during the sunrise.
We could also enter the hangar that houses the historic flight. This is
not accessible to the general public as it is part of the airfield that
belongs to the air force. Behind the hangar are also some bigger
historic aircraft like the Casa and Douglas Skymaster which can’t be
seen from the museum area. |
Während meines Besuches gab
es viele zusätzliche Flüge mit dem Puma und Alouette III. Diese machten
Rundflüge mit den Mitgliedern des Mercedes und Porsche Klubs welche eine
grosszügige Spende ans Museum gemacht hatten.
Der Flugbetrieb dauert normalerweise von 9 bis 13 Uhr während der
normalen Öffnungszeiten des Museums von 9 bis 15 Uhr.
Ich war in der glücklichen Lage mit dem SAAFMPC schon vor Sonnenaufgang
um 6 Uhr eingelassen zu werden. So war es möglich während des
Sonnenaufganges Bilder zu machen. Es war auch möglich den Hangar zu
betreten in welchem sich die Flugzeuge des Historic Flight befinden.
Dieser ist für das normale Publikum nicht zugänglich da er sich auf der
Seite des Flugplatzes befindet, welcher der Luftwaffe gehört. Hinter dem
Hangar stehen noch grössere historische Flugzeuge wie die Casa und die
Douglas Skymaster. Diese können vom Museum aus leider nicht gesehen
werden. |

During sunrise, all the
flying aircraft were towed to the parking area in front of the museums
hangars from where they would fly.
A pleasant surprise was that the F-86 Sabre had been towed out of its
hangar and was basking in the sunshine. |
Während
des Sonnenaufganges wurden alle Maschinen auf die Parkflächen vor dem
Museum geschleppt von wo sie später zu ihren Flügen starteten.
Eine angenehme Überraschung war das die F-86 Sabre aus ihrem Hangar
gezogen wurde und sich in bestem Sonnenschein präsentieren konnte. |

And then the flying started
and I was busy taking pictures for the next few hours, the result you
can see in this report. |
