Anfang Oktober 2024 hatte der Verfasser die Gelegenheit, das USS Midway Museum in San Diego zu besuchen. Die USS Midway befindet sich am Navy-Pier im Stadtzentrum von San Diego und war der am längsten im Einsatz befindliche Flugzeugträger Amerikas im 20. Jahrhundert (von 1945 bis 1992). Insgesamt dienten 225.000 junge Matrosen auf dieser schwimmenden Stadt. Heute ist das interaktive Midway-Museum ein unvergessliches Erlebnis für Fans von Flugzeugträgern und der U.S. Navy.

Ein wenig Geschichte: Das USS Midway Museum wurde am 7. Juni 2004 eröffnet. Es ist das beliebteste und meistbesuchte Kriegsschiff der Vereinigten Staaten. Ausgestellt sind 37 verschiedene Flugzeuge, und das Museum verfügt über ein Kino, das „The Battle of Midway Theater“ heisst, sowie mehrere Flugsimulatoren. In den Jahren 2018 und 2019 wurden Szenen des vielfach ausgezeichneten Films „Top Gun:Maverick“ auf dem Museumsgelände gedreht. Ausserdem fand dort am 4. Mai 2022 die Weltpremiere dieses Films statt.

Während dem Besuch des Autors (2. Oktober 2024) befanden sich nicht weniger als drei aktive amerikanische Flugzeugträger im Hafen von San Diego. Es waren die USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), die USS Theodore Rooselvelt (CVN-71) und die Ronald Reagon (CVN-76). Auf einem der beigelegten Fotos sind die Silhouetten dieser drei Träger aus weiter Entfernung zu sehen.
