The Bristol Type 156
Beaufighter is a multi-role aircraft developed during the Second World
War by the Bristol Aeroplane Company. It was originally conceived as a
heavy fighter variant of the Bristol Beaufort bomber. Upon its entry to
service, the Beaufighter proved to be well suited to the night fighter
role, for which the RAF initially deployed the type during the height of
the Battle of Britain, in part due to its large size allowing it to
accommodate both heavy armaments and early airborne interception radar
without major performance penalties.
By fighter standards, the Beaufighter Mk.I was rather heavy and slow. It
had an all-up weight of 7,000 kg and a maximum speed of 350 km/h at
5,000 m. Nevertheless, the Beaufighter was all that was available in
terms of heavy fighter aircraft at the time in Great Britain.
Der Bristol Typ 156 Beaufighter ist ein Mehrzwek-Flugzeug, das im Zweiten Weltkrieg von der Bristol Airplane Company entwickelt wurde. Es wurde ursprünglich als ein schwer Jäger-Variante des Bristol Beaufort Bombers entwickelt. Bei ihrem Eintritt in den Dienst erwies sich der Beaufighter als gut für die Nachtjagd-Rolle, für die die RAF zunächst den Typ während der Battle of Britain einsetzte, zum Teil aufgrund ihrer großen Größe, die es erlaubte, sowohl schwere Zusatzausrüstung unterzubringen und die frühen luftgestützem Radar ohne größere Leistungseinbussen.
Nach Jäger-Standards war die Beaufighter Mk.I ziemlich schwer und langsam. ESie hatte ein Gesamtgewicht von 7.000 kg und eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 350 km / h auf 5.000 m. Trotzdem war die Beaufighter alles, was zur Verfügung stand, in Bezug auf schwere Jäger zu der Zeit in Großbritannien.
