The FAA is organized into squadrons. They are named with "# NAS", where "#" is a number and NAS for "Naval Air Squadron" is.

The squadrons of the FAA have a long tradition. From the first carrier landing of Cdr Edwin H. Dunning, DSC on 2 August 1917 on the integration in the RAF 1 April 1918 and the renewed independence 14 May 1937 up to today's modern FAA wich has found in the helicopter their ideal machine.

The squadrons of the FAA are now divided into two groups. 800 squadrons are represented as a frontline squadrons on almost all ships of the Royal Navy and the 700 scales are used to training.

Die FAA ist in Staffeln organisiert. Sie werden mit "# NAS" benannt, wobei „#“ eine Nummer ist und NAS für „Naval Air Squadron“ (Marine-Luft-Staffel) steht. 

Die Staffeln der FAA haben eine lange Tradition. Von der erster Trägerlandung von Cdr Edwin H. Dunning, DSC am 2. August 1917 über die Integration in die RAF 1. April 1918 und die erneute Selbstständigkeit 14. Mai 1937  bis zu der heutigen modernen FAA die mit dem Hubschrauber ihre ideale Maschine gefunden hat.

Die Staffeln der FAA werden heute in zwei Gruppen unterteilt. 800er Staffeln die als Frontstaffeln auf fast allen Schiffen der Royal Navy vertreten sind und die 700er Staffeln die zur Ausbildung dienen.

This grouping consists of training and aucillary squadrons. Earlier the grouping 700 to 749 had included originally catapult flights, which later became catapult squadrons. Series 700 to 710 were allocated for floatplane squadrons from 1943 but did not last. The 750 to 799 Squadron  series were only training and ancillary squadrons.

Diese Gruppe besteht aus Training und Unter-stützungsstaffeln. Die Gruppierung 700-749 umfasste anfänglich Katapulteinheiten, die später zu Katapultstaffeln. Serie 700-710 wurde ab 1943 Wasserflugzeug-Staffeln zugeordnet, aber nicht dauernd. Die 750 bis 799 Staffel Serie wurden nur die Ausbildung- und Unterstützungs-Staffeln.

The front-line squadrons consisted of the 800-809 single-seat fighter squadrons in carriers, 810-819 torpedo-bomber squadrons in carriers, 820-859 Spotter reconnaissance and torpedo bomber reconaissance squadrons, 860-862 Dutch manned and subsequently Dutch Navy squadrons, 870-872 single-seat fighter squadrons latterly for Royal Canadian Navy, 880-899 single-seat fighter squadrons in carriers.

Die Front-Staffeln bestanden aus den einsitzigen Träger-Jagdstaffeln 800 bis 809, Träger-Torpedo-Bomberstaffeln 810-819, Aufklärungs- und Torpedobomber Aufklärungsstaffeln 820-859 sowie 860-862 mit niederländischen bemannten und anschließend niederländische Marine integrierte Staffeln, 870 bis 872 einsitzige Jagdstaffeln zuletzt für die Royal Canadian Navy, 880 bis 899 einsitzige Träger-Jagdstaffeln.

The wartime front-line squadrons consisted of 1700-1709 amphibian bomber reconnaissance squadrons and 1770-1799 two-seat fighter squadrons.

1710-1749 torpedo bomber reconnaissance squadrons, 1750-1769 squadrons as single-seat fighter squadrons although no squadrons were taken up.

Die Kriegs Front-Staffeln bestanden aus 1700-1709 Amphibien-Bomber-Aufklärungs-Staffeln und 1770-1799 zweisitzige Jagdstaffeln.

1710-1749 Torpedobomber-Aufklärungs-Staffeln, 1750-1769 Staffeln als einsitzige Jagdstaffeln, obwohl keine Staffeln aufgestellt wurde.

Squadron numbers 1800-1899 were originally allocated, of which 1810-1829 were for Dive-bomber squadrons and 1830 to 1899 for single-seat fighter squadrons. The latter after the war used for RNVR squadrons, and subsequently for RNR squadrons. 

Staffeln von 1800 bis 1899 waren ursprünglich so zugeteilt, von 1810-1829 waren für Sturzkampf-bomber-Staffeln und von 1830-1899 für einsitzige Jagdstaffeln. Letztere wurden nach dem Krieg von RNVR Staffeln und anschließend für RNR Staffeln verwendet.

On 1. April 1924, the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force was formed, encompassing those RAF units that normally embarked on aircraft carriers and fighting ships. These Units were organized in Flights, numbering from 401 to 466.

Am 1. April 1924 wurde die Fleet Air Arm der Royal Air Force gebildet, die jene RAF-Einheiten umfasste, die normalerweise auf Flugzeugträger und Kampfschiffen in Dienst waren. Diese Einheiten wurden in Schwärme organisiert, num-meriert von 401 bis 466.
