Société Anonyme de Transport
Aérien (SATA) was a Swiss charter airline founded in June 1966, with its
head office on the property of Geneva Airport, and with its base in
Geneva. It started as an air-taxi operator and evolved to passenger and
cargo charters to points in Europe, the USA, South America and the
Caribbean.
SATA developed into an intercontinental airline. Among other things, the
company used a Caravelle in the wet lease for Air Ceylon from Ratmalana
Airport in Colombo to Bangkok, Bombay, Karachi, Kuala Lumpur and
Singapore. At its best, what was then the third largest Swiss airline
(after Swissair and Balair) flew to New York, Los Angeles, La Paz and
Bangkok, among others.
The Caravelle accident in Madeira contributed significantly to the
company's insolvency. The authorities also withdrew SATA's operating
license on 23. August 1978. The Compagnie de transport aérien (CTA)
was founded from the bankruptcy estate with part of the staff and new
management by Swissair.

Aérien (SATA) war eine im Juni 1966 gegründete Schweizer
Charterfluggesellschaft mit Hauptsitz auf dem Gelände des Genfer Flughafens
und Basis in Genf. Es begann als Lufttaxi-Unternehmen und entwickelte sich
zu Passagier- und Frachtchartern zu Punkten in Europa, den USA, Südamerika
und der Karibik.
SATA entwickelte sich zu einer interkontinental tätigen Fluggesellschaft. So
setzte das Unternehmen unter anderem auch eine Caravelle im Wetlease für Air
Ceylon vom Ratmalana Airport in Colombo nach Bangkok, Bombay, Karatschi,
Kuala Lumpur und Singapur ein. Zu ihren besten Zeiten flog die damals
drittgrösste schweizerische Fluggesellschaft (nach Swissair und Balair)
unter anderem nach New York, Los Angeles, La Paz und Bangkok.
Der Caravelle-Unfall in Madeira trug massgeblich zur Insolvenz des
Unternehmens bei. Die Behörden entzogen der SATA zudem am 23. August 1978
die Betriebsbewilligung. Aus der Konkursmasse wurde mit einem Teil des
Personals und neuem Management durch die Swissair die Compagnie de transport
aérien (CTA) gegründet.

While landing at Tromsø/Langnes Airport in Norway, a Convair CV-640
landed heavily, bounced, and landed back nose-down, resting 15m short of
the runway end.
18. December 1973
SATA Flight 730 a Sud
Aviation SE-210 Caravelle 10R crashed into the sea while on final
approach to Funchal Airport in Portugal, killing 36.
